We focus on building a community of support via regularly scheduled foster parent support meetings held both during the day and in the evening at several different locations. The schedule enables foster parents to attend at a time and location convenient for them.
We hold our initial training and orientation to foster care, MAPP (Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting), three to four times a year. The scheduling reflects the needs of busy parents. The sessions are often held in the evening or on weekends. You can check the calendar above for the next training we are planning.
Ongoing training is important for all of us whether we are social workers or foster parents. We get together each month to learn and to develop our skills. Recent trainings have included “Advocating for Your Child in School” and “Dating, the Internet and Healthy Relationships.” All of the topics focus on helping us to care for these challenging children. Dare’s staff psychologist, Dr. Steven Willis, often leads these trainings.
Holidays and celebrations are important to us. We host a holiday party each December and an ice cream social during the summer vacation. These events are opportunities for foster parents to make connections and socialize with other foster parents. We plan games and arts and crafts for the kids so that they can have some fun and meet other kids in care. Our foster parent appreciation event is a fixture in May and is an opportunity to celebrate our foster parents’ hard work.
