Connecticut Services

Dare Family Services provides Therapeutic Foster Care to young people, most of who are between the ages of 6 and 22 years. These children are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) or in DCF care on a voluntary basis. Dare foster parents receive a tax-free stipend of $55 a day, up to 18 days of paid vacation a year, and funds to cover recreational and/or therapeutic expenses for the youth such as summer camps, sports camps, lessons, etc. Families who choose to adopt may also continue to receive the stipend and are eligible to receive continued support through DCF’s Permanent Placement Services (PPSP) program, which Dare can provide. The PPSP allows us to contract with the Adoption Assistance Program (AAP) of the University of Connecticut Health Center to provide in-home post-adoptive support services for families who have chosen to adopt.

One of our foster parents, who has been with Dare for nearly ten years, comments, “You would think that the support is all for the kids, but I find that the support is there for the parents, and not just from one place. If your worker is not there, then you can talk with his/her supervisor and then the director if need be. Everyone is willing to help. I also like how much contact we have with the other foster parents who we can learn from and share our experiences with.”

One of our twelve-year-old girls said to us, “I am really happy that I have a really nice foster family.” An eleven-year-old girl said, “My favorite memory was of my first birthday at my home. This was my first birthday party ever!”
