Requirements to Become a Dare Family Services Foster Parent

: Foster parents must have the time and availability to be responsible for the supervision and care of a child 24 hours a day. Foster parents must also be available to attend clinical trainings, meetings and support groups.

Transportation: Foster parents need to have a car and a valid driver’s license and be available to take the child to medical appointments and when indicated, visits with the biological parents.

Physical Space: Foster parents must have a house or apartment of sufficient size to accommodate all members of the household and the foster child. The foster child must have his or her own room.

Age Foster parents need to have the maturity to deal with an adolescent. Candidates should demonstrate such maturity and be at least 21 years old.

CORI: Foster parents and household members 16 and older must consent to fingerprint driven background checks checking for any criminal history. A DCF check is also run to determine any histoy with the department.

Education: Foster parents need to have a high school diploma or GED.

Outside work: Dare prefers that a parent be available full-time as we have weekly groups, monthly trainings and spontaneous child needs. Those interested in additional part-time work must demonstrate the flexibility to meet these needs prior to working or taking a child.
