Requirements to Become a Dare Family Services Foster Parent

: Foster parents must have the time and availability to be responsible for the supervision and care of a child 24 hours a day. Foster parents must also be available to attend clinical trainings, meetings and support groups.

Transportation: Foster parents need to have a car and a valid driver’s license and be available to take the child to medical appointments and when indicated, visits with the biological parents.

Physical Space: Foster parents must have a house or apartment of sufficient size to accommodate all members of the household and the foster child.

Age Foster parents need to have the maturity to deal with an adolescent. We therefore require foster parents to be at least 25 years of age.

CORI: Foster parents consent to a criminal offender record information (CORI) check for all household members aged fourteen and older. The process includes verification of any prior involvement with the Department of Children and Families. Foster parents are also fingerprinted during the process.

Education: Foster parents need to have a high school diploma or GED.

Outside work: Foster parents may work a maximum of 25 hours per week as long as they are available for the ongoing needs of the foster child.
